Suggestions for San Francisco (and Bay Area) places to visit besides the usual places?

Nothing wrong with cable cars, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, etc., but I want to see something else. I will be able to drive out of town (hopefully not more than 40 - 50 miles).
