A bunch of ppl in a yahoo chatroom messaged me saying the same things wanting me to see their profiles. Why?

They all bombarded me as soon as i entered the room, and for some reason they all asked me what i thought of their profiles. i looked at one but after that i realized they were probably like some program posing as real people. Why did the program want me to view the profiles? Was it trying to harm my computer?
