Was the Soviet Union our ally and did America screw it up?

I think they were the best friends we could have had. I met Russians. They said, "Between the two of us we gotta lot of fire power." But, America being the world shoved them off. The Russians wanted no more than to stop the world fighting. Is the Ukraine any different than what we did to the American Indians? America had a chance with you and we blew it.
