Can the lines going to a power steering box of a 1967 chevy be installed incorrectley ?

Is there such thing as installing ( accidently criss crossing ) the pressure line and the return line of a power steering box of a 1967 chevy incorrectly, there by causing high pressure in the system to blow up the high pressure line and rupture the seal of the pump ?. this is the problem I'm experiancing. two lines have been ruptured and the pump damaged. my understanding there are relieve valves inside the pump to prevent damage?.
